BARAK OBAMA VISITS WAYNEDALE
Friday morning, April 4th there was a full parking lot and a long line of Waynedaler’s waiting at Wayne High School to get a glimpse of the phenomenon called Barak Obama.
Obama, who is in a neck-and-neck race with presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton made his entrance after a rousing introduction from Mike Riley, a former campaign manager for Robert Kennedy. Riley gave a little history of the Kennedy campaign as well as relating stories about Martin Luther King who was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
Obama took the podium and after a moment of silence for King, he put forth his main message which was to bring change in areas of healthcare, the economy, the war in Iraq and the overall future of the country.
Both democratic candidates Clinton and Obama are campaigning in Indiana as Indiana may prove to be a pivotal piece of the puzzle that will decide which democratic candidate will run against republican John McCain in the race for the White House.
Obama spent about 30 minutes talking about his vision for the future and then opened the program for some Q&A from the audience.
The first question involved the recent gang related deaths in Fort Wayne. Obama said there were some things the government could do, but at least part of the answer lies within the community. Parents need to parent, the community needs to support law enforcement efforts and parents need to support the teachers. He also fielded questions from the UAW who are concerned about jobs being sent over seas, and middle class income. Obama spoke of trade agreements not being enforced, moral issues and community values, strengthening the family unit, drug courts, and a partnership between Washington and the people of the United States.
The close race between Obama and Hillary has caused voter registrations to increase by thousands and both candidates may come back to Fort Wayne as the election draws near.
