29,000 NEW JOBS FOR HOOSIERS – Straight From The Senate

Indiana has had a record year for economic development in 2017, with nearly 29,000 new jobs planned for the future.

Since the year began, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation has secured 270 commitments from businesses inside and outside of our state to grow or locate in Indiana. Together, these companies are on track to create 28,846 new jobs with an average hourly rate of $27.38, or nearly $57,000 annually — a wage more than 27 percent higher than the state’s average rate of $21.52 per hour.

The businesses committed to developing or growing in Indiana like Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Indiana, Infosys and Beijing West Industries represent several industries spanning manufacturing, technology and international investment. For example, of the 270 commitments, 126 came from manufacturing businesses, 58 came from tech and tech-enabled firms, and 34 came from foreign-based companies.

In addition, the Indiana Small Business Development Center Network assisted in 222 new business starts, resulting in the creation of 687 new jobs, and the Indiana Procurement Technical Assistance Center has counseled 751 existing small businesses, helping 86 clients secure nearly $31 million in federal grants.

On top of the thousands of jobs secured in 2017, Chief Executive Magazine ranked Indiana first in the Midwest and fifth in the United States for doing business in its 2017 Best and Worst States for Business survey published earlier this year.

Hoosiers should be proud of Indiana’s economic success. Our state has worked hard to develop a pro-business environment and tax climate, and companies across the world are taking notice and coming to Indiana. I look forward to the positive impact these new jobs will bring to Hoosier families and our state as a whole.
