SCULPTURE BY ESTEEMED AREA ARTIST DONATED TO THE RESCUE MISSION
“The Good Shepherd”, a bronze sculpture created by esteemed local artist Hector Garcia was unveiled and dedicated on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at The Rescue Mission (301 W. Superior St., Fort Wayne).
Garcia recently donated the piece, which depicts Jesus with a staff and a lamb. The piece will be mounted in the Mission’s front entry to greet residents and guests as they arrive.
“We are beyond honored that Mr. Garcia has chosen our ministry to receive this beautiful, one of a kind piece,” says the Mission’s Chief Development Officer, Richard Cummins.
Hector Garcia is an IPFW associate professor emeritus of fine arts and taught sculpture and figure drawing from 1976 to 1997. He first taught with the Fort Wayne Art Institute, followed by IPFW after the merger with Indiana University. A nationally and internationally recognized sculptor, Garcia received a B.F.A. in sculpture from The John Herron Institute in Indianapolis and an M.F.A. from Indiana University.
He also completed special scholarship work at the Instituto Allende in Mexico.
Garcia has completed hundreds of sculptures and commissioned works during his prolific career. He has produced medals and medallions for award ceremonies in Helsinki, Finland; Takaoka, Japan; Gera, Germany; Plosk, Poland; and London, England.
Collections of his work are owned by notable individuals throughout the country including Ted Turner, Ray Bradbury, Herbie Hancock, Chris Schenkel, Bob Knight, Gene Keady, Richard Lugar, and Lance Armstrong.

About The Rescue Mission
The Rescue Mission is comprised of four subsidiary programs in Fort Wayne:
Life House (52+ beds): Immediate Housing Program provides basic needs and spiritual support to men facing a homeless crisis. Community Meals Program provides three nutritious meals daily to its residents and to the public. Meals are served at 7 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. daily.
Restoration House (40+ beds): Short- and Long-Term residential programs meeting spiritual, emotional, physical and educational needs of men facing a homeless crisis.
Charis House (78 beds): Short- and Long-Term residential programs meeting spiritual, emotional, physical and educational needs of women and children facing a homeless crisis.
Treasure House: The Rescue Mission’s thrift store (formerly known as Bargains Galore).
Proceeds from the store help to fund The Rescue Mission’s programs.
