The Home Depot® Foundation announced a $86,700 grant to Indianapolis based Volunteers of America of Indiana, to address the critical housing needs of U.S. military veterans. This grant is part of $1.795 million in grants announced for 10 Volunteers of America homeless veterans programs in eight states. These grants will be used to refurbish or build 416 housing units for homeless veterans, as well as many of their family members.

In January 2014, Volunteers of America of Indiana opened the Richard Lugar Safe Haven for Veterans in Fort Wayne. The Safe Haven is a 25 bed temporary residential facility funded by the VA for homeless male and female veterans. The aim of the program is to provide a safe place for the veterans until permanent housing and other benefits can be established. Grant funds from the Home Depot Foundation will be used to add additional case management offices, private living quarters for special needs veterans, new floor covering throughout the facility, and will provide for the development of an outside recreation area for the comforts of veterans who reside at the facility.

“I am thrilled with the partnership that Volunteers of America has with the Home Depot Foundation to assist and support our veterans.  These brave men and women have served their country honorably and with dignity.  We should not, and cannot, forget that the freedoms we enjoy have come for many at a great price.  The Richard Lugar Safe Haven for Veterans is a new beginning for struggling homeless veterans and our opportunity to serve them as they have served us.”

Nationally, Volunteers of America serves more than 10,000 homeless veterans each year in 46 cities.
“We’re proud to support the important work Volunteers of America of Indiana is doing every day to help homeless and at-risk veterans,” said Gaven Gregory, Executive Director of The Home Depot Foundation. “Here in Fort Wayne and in cities across the country, we’re putting our dollars and the time and talents of our Team Depot volunteers to work toward our commitment to help ensure that every veteran has a safe place to call home.”

In addition to the grants, Volunteers of America affiliates are supported by Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force. Team Depot volunteers have already made a difference at Volunteers of America homeless veteran housing sites across the country.
