LOCAL LITTLE LEAGUES HELP SAVE LIVES
Some dedicated area Little League players are being celebrated for stepping up to the plate to help with summer blood donations. In the attached photo, players and coaches from the Don Ayres Time Corners Little League hold their new trophy from the American Red Cross which recognized the league for collecting the most blood during a series of special donor drives.
Teams from the Don Ayres Time Corners, Georgetown and Wallen Little Leagues recently wrapped up the 2014 Fort Wayne Little League Challenge. As part of the competition, teams were encouraged to recruit blood donations from their fans and supporters. The teams competed for prizes including pizza parties and a traveling trophy for the league attracting the most donors. Local restaurants B’ Antonio’s, Pizza Forum and Marco’s Pizza generously donated the pizza prizes.
Summer is always a difficult time of year to collect blood with families traveling, high schools and colleges out of session and many regular donors busy with other activities. Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.
