14TH ANNUAL “RIVER CITY RAT RACE”

The River City Rat Race was born in the year 2000 and became an instant success. Currently, there are over 1000 runners and more than 100 volunteers, it is clear that this event is a success. The feature event is a 10K (6.2) mile road race, and a 5K timed run, both with a beautiful downtown course. Author and senior writer Hal Higdon of Runner’s World Magazine said, “It’s one of the most scenic 10K courses I’ve ever run!” This is high praise coming from one of the most experienced and highly sought after running experts in North America. RunIndiana.com lists the River City Rat Race as one of the state’s top 10 races.

The race is this Sunday, weekend before Halloween. What better timing for an event called “Rat Race”. Although the race attracts top area runners, this is considered a “fun run”. There are door prizes for participants of all ages, even volunteers. Besides age group awards, they also have a best costume award.

“Since the race started,” according to Race Director Pamela Wolfe, “it has generated over $80,000 for local charities.” 100% of the proceeds go to charity, but chief beneficiary is the YMCA’s Strong Kids Program.
This year’s race kicks off on Sunday, October 27, 2013. The race begins at 2pm. Starting line is Main and Barr Street, adjacent to the United Arts Center. The course takes a scenic tour through Fort Wayne and finishes at the Old Fort. Registration and packet pick-up takes place Saturday, October 26 from 5pm to 8pm at the downtown YMCA. Packet pick-up is also available on race day from 12pm to 1:30pm at the 1st Source Bank Center, 200 E. Main Street. NO RACE DAY REGISTRATIONS!
