STUDENT-RUN KELTY’S KAFÉ TO OPEN

Kelty’s Kafé opened at Ivy Tech Community College Northeast’s Coliseum Campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., on September 11. Run by Hospitality Administration students, the café is a lunchtime space for employees, students, and community members. It is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays through November 20.

Each week, a different student runs the restaurant, choosing everything from its theme to its menu. To kick off Kelty’s, the café will have a Pop, Rock, & Be-Bop lunch, a ’50s drive-in theme restaurant complete with dancers from a local studio teaching how to do dances like the Twist, the Mashed Potato, and the Watusi.

“I’m here to give them advice and guide them and keep them on track,” says Meshele Wyneken, a Hospitality Administration instructor and person who oversees Kelty’s Kafé. “They come up with the themes and the recipes. They have to price everything out. They have to show where they made a profit. They have to run everything from start to finish.”

While the restaurant largely attracts Ivy Tech Northeast students and faculty, more community members have been stopping by for lunch, Wyneken says, including students from Concordia High School and people from IPFW and other area businesses.

Upcoming themes include: What Do You Think About Them Apples?, Southern Comfort Food, and a Brazilian Buffet.
