LITTLE RIVER WETLANDS PROJECT TO HOST MONARCH FESTIVAL
The public is invited to attend Little River Wetlands Project’s 2013 Monarch Festival, which will be held Saturday, September 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eagle Marsh, 6801 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. This free, family-friendly event celebrates the monarch butterfly, thousands of which are likely to be stopping by Eagle Marsh on their fall migration southward.
Every year, monarch butterflies make a 2,500-mile migration to overwintering grounds high in the mountains of Mexico—the only insect capable of making such a trip, due to their unique lifecycle and wing structure. They fly in masses to the same winter roosts, often to the exact same trees.
At the festival, LRWP will offer a variety of displays about monarchs’ lifecycle, including live monarchs in various stages of metamorphosis. A monarch trail will pass by educational stations, where hikers can learn more about the monarchs’ incredible journey, with special crafts and activities for kids. Participants can help plant milkweed plugs, which will give monarchs needed food on future stopovers.
