ANNUAL BUST A MOVE
For the 6th year, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and the Fort Wayne Derby Girls are partnering to host Bust a Move, an auction to raise money for women with breast cancer in our community. The event will be held at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art on Friday, October 4, 2013, beginning at 6PM. Just as in years past, Bust a Move will feature a live auction of unique and inspiring works of art, along with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and entertainment.
Each year for Bust a Move, local breast cancer survivors volunteer their bodies to be cast for the project. Once complete, the plaster busts are distributed to local artists to create unique, inspiring representations of the female bust and the emotions associated with cancer. The artists modify the casts, using various artistic mediums, transforming them into outstanding works of art. Twenty pieces of art will be auctioned at this event.
“Over the years, we’ve had some stunning pieces created for this event,” says Amber Recker, founder of the Bust a Move event and Director of Marketing & Development for Cancer Services. “In 2012, we shattered our record with one piece selling for over $8,500.”
“We are continually amazed by the creativity of the artists involved in this project,” says Dianne May, president & CEO of Cancer Services. “We could not do this event without their dedication, and we appreciate their willingness to support it every year.”
The event also has a profound impact on the survivors involved. The casting process has been therapeutic for many as they share their story and celebrate survivorship. When the artwork is revealed at the event and they see their bust for the first time, the survivors often are astounded. Every story of survivorship is beautiful and this event allows them to celebrate that.
