STUDENTS HONORED FOR SHARING ART FROM THE HEART
The American Heart Association and Frontier Communications joined together to promote healthy behavior and educate local youth on the prevention of cardiovascular disease through a local art contest.
Today, about 1 in 3 American kids and teens are overweight or obese. Obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. Excessive weight in children places additional burden on the health of the heart at an early age. 60% of overweight children have at least one other risk factor for heart disease.
“It’s important that children, as well as parents in our community are aware of the health risks associated with an unhealthy lifestyle, says Dan Sullivan, General Manager of Frontier Communications. “We designed this unique and educational contest that will aid in our endeavor to prevent our youth from ever experiencing heart disease.”
The “HeART” (Heart/Art) contest” gave Fort Wayne 3rd grade students in the school districts of both Allen County and Fort Wayne the opportunity to add some heart to their art. Schools were asked to register to enter the contest and those participating school had students submit drawings depicting what heart health means to them.
A panel of volunteer judges selected by Frontier Communications reviewed the finalist collection and selected the following three students as winners of the contest.
·Ahoki Aranda, Abbett Elementary School
·Alejandra Romo, Most Precious Blood School
·Lexi Dippold, St. Joseph – St. Elizabeth School
The three students will receive a $100 gift card and have their artwork displayed this summer in area Frontier retail stores. Their teachers who coordinated the contest will also receive a $100 gift card and the school will be presented with a $500 check.
To cap off the students achievement, they were recognized at the Fort Wayne Heart Ball on April 19th at the Fort Wayne Country Club, where their art was displayed throughout the evening.
The Heart Ball supports the American Heart Association’s efforts to educate communities about children’s heart health and raises funds for Congenital Heart Disease Research and Childhood Wellness.
“Our guests were excited to see what a special impact these talented students are making by helping to promote the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association. It was one of the many highlights of the event,” said Emily Hayes, Heart Ball Director.
