Little River Wetlands Project, a local nature organization protecting almost 1,200 acres of natural and restored wetlands in Allen and Huntington Counties, offers interesting and informative nature events this April. Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6301 Engle Road, Fort Wayne to hike and explore the preserve’s interesting plants and wildlife.

9 to 10:30 a.m.
“Marsh Babies”
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6301 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. Spring is the time when new babies arrive at LRWP preserves! Join retired biology professor Gary Tieban on a hike to look for and learn about the new life at our wetlands.
Thursday, April 11
8 a.m to 10 a.m.
“Gardening as if Nature Matters”
Light breakfast and nature presentation for nature lovers 50+ at Coventry Meadows Senior Community on W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne. Master Gardeners Judith Nastally and Laurie Proctor will offer ways to garden that improve the environment and give us the means to reconnect to the natural world around us.

Short Hikes for Short Legs: Preschool Adventures with Birds
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn. 6301 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. Children ages 3 to 5 and their families will first enjoy a hands-on interactive activity to learn about how different birds have different ways of eating, and children will use their hands instead of their wings and feet to try nest-building. Then we’ll go outside using special “binoculars” to look for our winged friends in the wetland.

1 to 5 p.m.
“Earth Day Fort Wayne 2013”
Celebrate Earth Day Fort Wayne at Eagle Marsh nature preserve (6801 Engle Road) and learn about all the earth-friendly efforts taking place in our community. Included in the day’s program are a 5K fundraising Walk on the Eagle Marsh trails (registration required) and numerous free family-friendly nature activities, including an opportunity to plant native plants at the preserve.

8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
“Birding by Ear”
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6301 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. Dave Reichlinger of the Stockbridge Audubon Society will lead a hike for those who want to learn more about how to recognize birds of the marsh by their songs, whistles, and other avian sounds.
Saturday, April 27
1 to 2:30 p.m.
“Family Fun Hike: Birds of Eagle Marsh”
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6301 Engle Road, Fort Wayne for this family learning adventure. We’ll first find out how different birds of the marsh use their different attributes and skills for eating, building nests, and laying eggs. Then we’ll go outside to search for the birds of Eagle Marsh and their homes. Bring binoculars if you have them.
