HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO GRANDMA KAREN!

This Mother’s Day is a very special one for my older sister Karen (Levihn) Leach. She and her husband Tom became first time grandparents when son Nick and his wife Angie welcomed son Cohen Joshua into the world on March 16.

At eight pounds and one ounce and 21 inches long his beautiful deep blue eyes shine with the promise of new life, a new beginning.

Nick and Angie decided not to know the sex of their child before the birth. So Grandma-to-be Karen who wanted to make a quilt to welcome the bundle of joy knew she would have to make the perfect quilt for either sex. The next challenge is when she is informed the nursery colors are yellow and soft gray as in bumblebees and elephants. Attempting to find the right shade of gray in sufficient quantity meant visiting countless fabric stores in the Mansfield/Dallas area until the perfect shade was found in Dallas on “Fabric Row” where several specialty fabric stores reside amongst ethnic restaurants.

The cross-stitching begins: twelve blocks with bright colors depicting the toys and joys of babyhood. Each block is sashed with yellow followed by the gray fabric. The last block was not completed until after Baby Cohen was born as it contains his name and birth date. Finally it is time for the finishing with the addition of gray backing and yellow binding.

Tom and Karen arrive in Fort Wayne Easter weekend to meet the newest member of the family and to present the quilt. It is admired and will be a treasured heirloom. For now, Baby Cohen is oblivious to what a special gift he has received from his grandparents who love him very much. He is just content to lie in his mother’s arms and be at peace with the world.
