HONORS FLIGHT FUNDRAISER
WWII veterans celebrated a birthday on April 17 during an Honors Flight fundraiser held at 122nd Fighter Wing.
Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders presented the birthday cake to WWII and Korean War veteran, Mr. Bernie Reust of Huntington who happened to turn 84 years old on the day of the fundraiser.
(L to R): Robert Soest of Fort Wayne, “Porky” Holt of Decatur, Bernie Reust of Huntington, Homer Hoke of Waynedale, Herman Lenhart of Decatur, and Charles Yates of Butler.
Currently there are over 200 WWII Veterans from Northeast Indiana (with new applications coming in weekly) on a waiting list to see the monument in Washington D.C. that was built in their honor. The average age of the veterans on the list is 87.
In 2009, we had the honor of escorting 65 veterans to Washington D.C., wanting to top that number in 2010, we need the community’s help. These heroes have given enough; they shouldn’t have to pay their way. To send one veteran to see “their” memorial costs approximately $700. Ninety seven percent of all donations go directly towards the veterans’ trips. Without generous donors these flights would not be possible.
