ELMHURST’S LAST PRODUCTION – THE BOY FRIEND
Amidst the drama of the school budget crisis and the controversial closing of Waynedale’s Elmhurst High School, the theater club is preparing for what is likely to be their final curtain call.
The setting for this bright, fun musical is the 1920’s French Riviera. The main character is Polly Browne, a rich heiress, who attends a finishing school for wealthy girls. Because her father is convinced that all boys are interested in nothing beyond the family’s wealth, pressures from him have left her the only girl in school without a boy friend. Upon meeting a boy that she is interested in, a messenger boy, she pretends to a poor secretary. After falling for him and realizing that his life style does not match the expected income of a mere messenger boy, she begins to have other thoughts about whom or what he may actually be. I will not give away the ending here.
The Boy Friend first opened in the United States at the Royale Theatre on September 30, 1954. Julie Andrews starred in the role of Polly in her Broadway debut. Since that time, the small cast and low budget has made this musical a popular choice for schools and small theatre groups.Despite the hardships associated with the school closing, and the uncertainty regarding their education, the Elmhurst students have persevered through this production. Their hard work and dedication to their school is an inspiration. As the saying goes, “the show must go on”.
There will be two shows held in the Elmhurst auditorium: April 22 and 24 at 7:30 pm. The school is located at 3829 Sandpoint Road. All tickets are $7.
