AFGHANISTAN TOUR OF DUTY CONTINUES WITH A MISSION

Chandler’s duty position is over the Vehicle Maintenance for the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police equipment. The soldier’s there also mentor so that they can transition the operation over to Afghan’s in the near future. He has made a few trips to the Afghan maintenance shops that are currently managed by civilian contractors and mostly local Afghans performing the repairs. Driving in the local area requires CMSgt Chandler to be very defensive and constantly alert.

CMSgt Steven Chandler shares his experience while serving his country. His hope is for the American public to read what else happens in a combat zone besides engaging in war.

Chandler has emailed copy and photos about the Humanitarian Mission trip he was able to take part in. It is an ongoing project where the deployed military members reach out to help the Afghan poor with items donated from the United States.

CMSgt Steven Chandler writes, “I’m proud of the community support the 122d Fighter Wing continually receives, especially in the Waynedale area.”
When we donate food and clothing items within our communities we seldom get to put them in the hands of the needed. I truly was not prepared for the experience of putting those items in the hands of the impoverished families of Afghanistan.

On November 27th I joined approximately 60 volunteers who donated their time to perform a Humanitarian Mission for the underprivileged peoples living in Kabul, Afghanistan. This period of November was aligned with the Eid al-Adha which is an important Muslim faith-based three day festival.

The people we helped were Kuchi nomads, once proud people that bartered livestock from across the plains and mountains of Afghanistan. They have migrated to relatively safe areas within the cities. Most have sold their flocks in order to support their families and now live in mud and scavenged material refugee camps scattered throughout the city.

Our group distributed 900 desperately needed donated blankets to needed families and care packages with hats, gloves, school supplies and toys to the children of these families.
