Our Waynedale Branch Post Office is on the Postal Service’s “hit list” of branches it is considering closing. The Waynedale Branch Post Office at 7025 Old Trail Road has been serving our Waynedale community since June of 1970.

A grass roots petition drive opposing the closing of the Waynedale Post Office is being coordinated by Billie Rykard, president of the Belle Vista/Allendale Neighborhood Association. Wayne Township Trustee Richard Stevenson is supporting the petition drive.

Petitions are available for signature at Waynedale area businesses including, Azars Restaurant, 6800 Bluffton Road; Waynedale Cafe, 5700 Bluffton Road; East of Chicago Pizza, 5905 Bluffton Road; Hall’s Restaurant, 1502 Bluffton Road; Minnie’s Diner, 6433 Bluffton Road and FOE #248, 4940 Bluffton Road. If you don’t immediately see the petition, please ask for it.

You can also contact Karen Walker at the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office, 449-7000, to sign a petition there or contact Ms. Rykard at 478-1781 to sign or to assist her with the petition drive. Many neighbors already have signed the petition, which was available at the Waynedale Picnic.

Ms. Rykard stressed that neighbors should sign only one petition and must both sign and print their names. They also should list their address and zipcode. The zipcode is very important so the Postal Service can identify which zipcodes are represented on the petition.

The Postal Service listed eleven branch post offices in Indiana for possible closing. Along with Waynedale, the other Fort Wayne branch on the “hit list” was the Diplomat Station on the Southeast side of Fort Wayne.

Closing Waynedale and Diplomat would leave the entire south side of Fort Wayne with no Post Office window service. The closest Post Office with window service for south side residents would become the Main Post Office Downtown, which already is extremely busy.

The Postal Service is not proposing closing the three branches with window service on the north side of Fort Wayne, Hazelwood, Northwood, and Centennial. Nor, is the Postal Service proposing to close Gabriel Station on Bluffton Road, which offers no window service.
