ABOITE TOWNSHIP ONE-ROOM SCHOOL REUNION

The fifteenth annual Aboite Township One-Room School Reunion was held on Saturday, October 4, at the Aboite Township Fire Station Reception Room on Aboite Center Road with a total of 50 in attendance. Of the eight one-room schools, Aboite Center # 5 was well represented. The eight schools of the township were: Klaehn #1, Stouder #2, Harper #3, Cory #4, Aboite Center #5, Bullard #6, Homestead #7 and Hogg #8.

The afternoon activities began at 3:00 p.m. with the opening of the restored Aboite Center # 5 and tours with “School Marm” Linda Huge. Also on display at the school was a scale model of the Wabash & Erie Canal Aqueduct that carried the canal water over the Aboite River. Ed and Pauline Hurley constructed the scale model and were on hand to discuss its function and answer any questions.

The former students then gathered in the reception room to fellowship, reminisce and view the many pictures of by-gone years of each school, students and teacher listings.

At 5:00 p.m. announcements were made, and a drawing took place for several door prizes as the ladies prepared the food tables for the potluck style meal.

The guest speaker, Bill Jones, an aeronautical photographer serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, focused on the closing months of the war. A slide show of events leading up to the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima was presented.

The date of the 2009 reunion is October 3, 2009. Former students wishing to attend may call Nancy Kuker at 260-432-1191, or Jim Ellis at 260-432-1868 to get on the mailing list.
