POWELL REPRESENTS REGION 5
Kristina Powell, 15, of Fort Wayne will represent Region 5 (Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin) in the 71 running of the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, on July 26. She will join six others from this region, competing with approximately 60 other racers in the Rally Super Stock Division who qualified to enter the finals to represent their Region.
She won this opportunity by competing in 14 Rally racing events during the past year, finishing with 4 first places and 4 second places. These races were held in Indianapolis, Buchanan, MI and Louisville, KY.
The All-American Rally race finals are held in conjunction with the All-American finals for Local City Champs from their local cities. Over 500 racing Champs from the three Rally Divisions and the three Local Divisions (Stock, Super Stock and Masters) will arrive in Akron on Monday, July 21, sign in and spend the week preparing for the “Greatest amateur downhill racing event of the world.”
Kristina, a student at Heritage Senior High School is the daughter of Tim and Phyllis Powell of Poe, Indiana. Her car and racing is sponsored by her grandparents, Charles and Marvel Powell of the Waynedale area. The Powell family has a long history of Soap Box Derby competition. Her cousin Shannon Neumann won the Fort Wayne local race in 1987; cousin Dani Schnieder was the local winner of all three Divisions in Goshen, Indiana in 1998 thru 2001; and sister Kalene Powell placed fourth in the Stock Division at Akron in 2002 and reached the finals in the Super Stock Division in 2003 and 2004.
