LOCAL RESIDENT DISPLAYS HER ART

Jessica is a 1999 graduate of Elmhurst High School. She and her husband Doug have two sons, Zachary 2, and Jackson, 6 months.

Jessica attended Anderson University after high school and majored in education She finished her Bachelor of Science Degree at IPFW. One of her roommates at Anderson College, Elizabeth, was an Art Major and it was through her that Jessica became interested in art. She said, “I loved the art department and enjoyed watching Elizabeth as she completed her sculptors. I loved working with charcoal and I also learned to paint with acrylics.”

Jessica taught at Village Woods Elementary School for a couple of years, but gave up teaching to be with her sons. “It was a tough decision to give up my career, but I wanted so much to be a mother that I didn’t want to miss out being with the boys while they are going through their formative years.”

Jessica said one of her favorite things is for her and her neighbor to load the babies into a stroller and head to Dragon’s Keep for a cup of Chi.
George Webber and Mary Isenhour, owners of Dragon’s Keep Café on Lower Huntington Road, will be displaying Jessica’s artwork until Sunday, July 20th.

Jessica works mostly at night after the boys have gone to bed. She said this last year has been especially difficult as she has lost both her mother and her grandmother and went through a difficult pregnancy. “I poured myself into my art, and it was a great release for me.”

She plans on working on her masters degree while she is away from teaching and as far as her future art plans she said, “I plan to just go wherever my art takes me. I am excited to be able to display some of my work and get some feedback from the community.”

Jessica does commission work as long as it is within her range of expertise. She said that if someone wants something that is out of her range she will refer them to other artists. She can be reached at jkoener918@verizon.net.
