Most of you are aware by now not open e-mail unless you know the sender. And I hope you know that adult websites are high risk for viruses and spyware. As a matter of fact many legitimate websites are targeted because of their popularity, such as MySpace and Facebook even Google had some spyware problems a few months back. What surprised me is that now you don’t even have to have an internet connection to get infected. It seem that items such as iPods, the TomTom GPS device, digital picture frames or external hard drives, may come factory loaded with one or more viruses. I read about one person who bought a digital picture frame and said “It contained the nastiest virus that he had encountered in his 20 years of working on computers.” And the person that bought the new external hard drive said it came with a password stealing virus. Apparently it happens for the same reason we have so many other recalls from goods made in China, poor quality control. The associated press contacted the major electronics manufacturers in China in regards to this problem and they all declined to comment. Apple was the only company to say anything about it and their answer was that in the final stages of manufacturing random iPods were tested and the computer used to test them was infected. As for the digital video frames Sam’s Club and Target are investigating the complaints but have not been able to verify their frames were the source of the viruses, however Best Buy said it pulled all its affected China made digital photo frames from the shelves. So what can you do to protect your computer? Get a good antivirus program and keep it up to date. I see many computers in the shop with expired virus protection. I realize that if you are on dial up it takes a long time to download the latest virus definitions, but you have to take the time and do it. That virus program that came preinstalled on the machine several years ago, is no longer effective if the virus patterns are no longer up to date. And the virus patterns won’t be up to date if you didn’t renew you subscription. When it comes to your computers health you have to be proactive. If you want some advice on what’s good in the way of virus protection send me an e-mail. And as always if you have any questions or comments send them to firstname.lastname@example.org .
