SMOKE ON THE WIND

A LITTLE SECRET

At all Native American gatherings, prayer is offered, most often by an honored elder. It makes no difference to me if a person is Native or not – ALL are welcome at our dances and encouraged to join in when the MC announces: “Intertribal – everyone come and dance in the sacred pow wow circle.”

I have seen lives changed when a person comes into the sacred circle. It is a very powerful circle.

Okay, don’t put your skivies in a twist, I’m going to tell you. It’s simple and can be summed up in …. I was going to say in just one word, but no. There are two words, and they are Love and Respect. Love and Respect for The Creator and all the gifts that we have been blessed with and continue to be blessed with.

Every step we take upon Mother Earth is a prayer. Yes, I said every step. Oh well, sure, the dancing, the drum, the songs. You are correct. They are all expressions of gratitude prayers by the dancers, singers, and all who enter the sacred circle.

Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret of the sacred circle. You will love it. Try it. Here it is. Get yourself a hula hoop. Yeah, I know, you can’t hula and don’t want to. No, I’m not going to call you a big chicken. Here is what you do with the hoop. Place it down on Mother Earth. Stand outside the circle, close your eyes, and ask that The Holy Spirit come and be in the center of your hoop – your circle. Say a gratitude prayer. There has to be something that you are grateful for, isn’t there? Okay, good, that’s wonderful. Now, step into the center of the hoop.

Yes, I know what you are feeling. You are feeling The Holy Spirit in the center of your circle – your heart. God Bless you, my friend. He loves you and so do I. Now pick up your hoop and give it away to bless another. Be sure to tell that person and to demonstrate how it works.
