THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
ANOTHER LEFT OUT
Stories in the newspapers tell us that Ron Santo has again been deprived his chance to be a member of the Cooperstown Baseball Hall Of Fame.
The last two years I have never received a reply to two letters I wrote to the Veterans Selection Committee about Bill Dinneen.
Bill Dinneen played Major League Baseball as a pitcher 1898 thru 1909. He won three games in the 1903 World Series playing for Boston A.L. Four times he won 20 or more games. He started umpiring in the American League1909-37. He umpired the first All-Star Game with Bill Klem, Bill McGown, and Cy Rigler. He was the first of six Major League Players to have placed and umpired in World Series competition. He umpired in seven fall classics. Dinneen pitched a no-hitter September 27, 1905 and umpired Bill Dietrich’s June 1, 1937. His list of accomplishments goes on and on. However, my letters never received a reply. You would think they would reply: GOT LOST? All my letters contained a self-addressed stamped envelope.
In 1994 Bill James published the book, “Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame Cooperstown and the Politics of Glory.” On page 28 of this book; ” There is some truth in what almost everybody will distort the record to advance their own candidate.”
