LOOKING FOR HER GUARDIAN ANGEL

When Maxine Kramer went to bed at 10:20pm on November 16 she had no idea that anything was wrong…then she felt numbness in her right arm. When she awoke, two hours had elapsed and she found herself lying on the floor, bruised and confused. A blood clot had dislodged from her leg and settled in her brain causing a loss of clear speech and paralysis on the right side of her body. She struggled to reach the phone that was lying on the floor, but when she managed to pick it up, it was dead. She crawled to her den and was able to punch the “0” button for an operator, but when the operator came on she was only able to slur out a few unintelligible words. Maxine said, “The operator must have thought I was drunk and she switched me to another operator, and then the line went dead.”

Confused, alone, and in panic, Maxine started randomly pushing buttons on the phone…and then…there was a voice on the other end.

Somehow Maxine managed to blurt out “James Liddy.” It was her son-in-laws name.

Her son-in-law and daughter live in Indian Village and the person on the other end of the line looked up the Liddy number and called. The unknown Guardian Angel explained to James that they had received a phone call and the person phoning was in some sort of trouble and was only able to speak his name.

James, and Maxine’s daughter Kathleen, drove to Maxine’s Coventry Villa condo to check on her. They found her lying in the den. They rushed her to Lutheran Hospital where a battery of tests were performed. Maxine was in the hospital for eight days and then in rehab for another ten. She said, “I have to keep a dictionary on hand as I have problems spelling and it is difficult to add numbers, but I am back on my feet and am now able to drive.” Maxine is self-sufficient again, thanks to the help of her daughter, son-in-law and a good Samaritan who lives somewhere on Lower Huntington Road.

Maxine said, “My Guardian Angel never told me their name, only that they live on Lower Huntington Road. I wish they would call so I could thank them. If they hadn’t taken the time, who knows what might have happened.”
