BACK PAIN

It looks like winter is here and that means it’s time to get the shovel out. And with that comes back pain. As much as we try to avoid injury, sometimes it cannot be prevented. In this article, I will give some tips on back pain prevention and what you can do to help treat it. When shoveling, make sure to wear warm clothes and boots with enough traction to prevent slipping. When shoveling, try to push the snow more than picking it up and dumping it. Take your time and make sure to switch hands at first sign of pain. Take a break every 15 minutes to allow for your body to recover. If you have to pick up the snow, keep standing straight up and lift with the legs. If you have a low back brace, make sure to wear it. When the shoveling is done, remember to salt the sidewalks/driveway.

Sometimes, no matter what you do, back pain cannot be prevented. There are several types of pain to be aware of. If you get a sharp pain, especially in the low back and neck, make sure you ice it as soon as possible. Make sure to wrap the ice in a towel for frostbite protection, and never lay directly on the ice. If you get more of a muscle pain (dull/cramping pain), like the soreness you get after working out, use a hot pad or take a warm bath. Make sure to stretch before and after shoveling, also.

No matter what, it is a good idea to always make an appointment with your chiropractor to see how severe the injury/injuries are. A chiropractor is considered a primary care physician and is trained to diagnose all problems. Then the chiropractor can decide the extent of the problem and the best treatment for it. In most cases, the injuries are not that severe and can be easily treated. Remember to be careful out there and as always, have a healthy day.
