PERENNIAL FAVORITES

Three years ago I took a real hard look at the group of plants known as perennials. Of course we all know that trees and shrubs are perennial but it is the other perennials that interest me most.

Since I have access to over 2,000 1-gallon perennials, it is so much fun to occasionally take a walk through the area just to see what might be coming into bloom today. Unlike annuals that bloom all through the growing season, perennials only bloom at certain times during the spring, summer and fall. Roses are the only perennial plants that actually bloom all season long. The April/May plants are now finished so the June/July plants are in full swing.

This is what you will see at this time of the year…astilbe, balloon flower, bell flower, black-eyed Susan (rudbeckia), butterfly bush, cone flower, corn flower, clematis, coreopsis, daylilies, dianthus, gaillardia, hardy gloxinia, Lucifer, and phlox. Yes, there are even more. The perfect flower garden is one that has perennial flowering plants surrounded by beautiful blooming annuals. This way you are guaranteed blooms all season.

Now, let’s talk daylilies. Three years ago I was told that the only daylily that people would want is the Stella’de Ore, the early yellow variety of lily and, I will admit, it was very popular. But in the next 2 years all I heard was that they wanted anything BUT Stella’de Ore. Now we have white, red, lavender, 2-tone and orange. My guess is that everyone has the Stella’de Ore. Daylilies are just now making their showing. Watch, also for perennial hibiscus to bloom real soon.
