EASTER, THE MOST COLORFUL HOLIDAY

Christmas is red, St. Patrick’s Day is green, spring is warm, but Easter is so colorful. So many choices for you to get the spring started while you are waiting for warmer weather. Azaleas, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums and all of the bulb plants with colors of yellow, pink, blue, white and lavender. How can you choose just one? And let’s not forget the Easter lily.

Many of these plants are also perennial such as the hydrangeas and all of the bulbs. But do not be fooled, as so many of us are, that the chrysanthemums and the azaleas are not the varieties that are perennial in the Fort Wayne area. No, these plants are only perennial in the southern states such as Tennessee and Georgia and the Carolinas. There are varieties of chrysanthemums and azaleas that are perennial here but you will not see them for sale in a florist or even the “big box” stores for Easter. Ask the clerk if the plants you are buying are perennial in your area and make sure the clerk knows what he or she is talking about, as many of them are “schooled” by grandma.

Probably the biggest disadvantage of Easter plants is so many of them are short-lived, especially the bulb plants. When a church places Easter plants on the alter on Saturday, we wonder how they will look on Sunday as many of the plants are “held” in a very cool area until the time of delivery. If you receive an Easter plant, care for it as you would any flowering plant but expect a very short life.
