LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Dear Mr. Stark,
Thank you for publishing the well-written letter in the October 12th issue of The Waynedale News about the epidemic of teenagers roaming the streets at all hours of the night.
The problem is only getting worse year after year because teenagers do not have anything better, more interesting, or more challenging to do with their time.
Why?
The teenager’s parents are failing to do a good job as parents. Parents need to take the time to teach these teenagers things that are challenging and rewarding, such as hobbies, sports, or activities that give the teenager’s a feeling of self-satisfaction, as well as, the reward of knowing they can do something well. Parents need to do a better job of promoting self-esteem in the teenager that is important to their future as adults.
Parents need to be there for their teenagers so that they don’t feel a need to turn to their teenage friends in the street at all hours of the night.
Parents need to take the time in the evenings NOW for their teenager’s and their teenager’s friends instead of thinking of themselves, because before you know it those teenagers will be gone and it will be too late to be a good parent.
As I see it, the parents of these teenagers are missing out on an opportunity to enjoy their teenager’s best years, and the teenager is losing out on even more.
It would be nice if Waynedale had a safe and fun place for just teenagers to go one night a week to socialize and interact with their friends. We seem to find things for younger children to do, and for adults and older people to do, but seldom does a community or parents provide for teenagers.
I’d like to see a response from Waynedale teenagers in The Waynedale News. We need to hear from teenagers too.
