DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS

Plans are moving forward for the extension of Ardmore Avenue. Ardmore will be extended to three lanes from Indianapolis to Lower Huntington roads. New traffic signals will be installed in the area. A new water main will be installed and stormwater improvements will be made. This project will improve access to Fort Wayne International Airport and increase economic development opportunities to benefit the community. Bids for the project will be received in mid-September. Construction (utility work) will start in late fall. Construction of the new roadway will begin in spring 2006 with completion in late fall 2006. At the completion of the roadway construction, work will begin to reconstruct the bridge on Lower Huntington Road. The city is paying nearly $1.3 million for the work. The State of Indiana will fund the remaining 80% of the project.

You probably have noticed the closure of Ardmore Avenue just north of Taylor Street. The city is making drainage improvements at the intersection. The $73,000 project will be completed before school starts on August 22. This is a very important project to improve stormwater drainage for the neighborhood.

The Lifetime Sports Academy recently finished another successful season. More than 12,000 young people took golf, tennis and swimming lessons for free thanks to this wonderful program through our Parks and Recreation Department. A special thanks to Tom and Marg Jehl for their hard work and dedication to the Lifetime Sports Academy.

I encourage you to get out and experience our more than 80 parks. This is a special year with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department celebrating its 100th birthday. Residents have been enjoying a summer full of special events and there are several more planned for the remainder of August. August 19th is $1 Friday at McMillen Golf Course and McMillen Ice Arena. August 26th is $1 Friday at Foster Golf Course. August 27th is the Centennial Social at Salomon Farm on Dupont Road. There will be an old-fashioned family picnic, music, dancing, and hay wagon rides. Admission is free. Hope to see you there!
