COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Bernie Beier, Fort Wayne’s Director of Homeland Security, recently appeared as a guest on Council Call-in, the City Channel (Cable 58) program hosted at 7 pm the 4th Wednesday of each month by myself and City Councilman Tom Smith. He detailed plans to utilize the recent $1.6 million homeland security grant to Fort Wayne, Allen County, and surrounding counties. These funds will be shared by many departments responsible for homeland security including police/sheriff/health/fire/animal control/homeland security and other units in Allen County and surrounding counties. A $250,000 mobile communications unit that can be utilized in any of the counties in this area is a typical example of the sensible current effort to regionalize homeland security prevention and response.

Recently citizens who live in the northwest section of Fort Wayne came to a City Council public hearing regarding a proposed annexation. They didn’t testify for or against the proposal but instead stated that they’d come to the meeting to obtain more information. A follow-up public informational meeting is scheduled in the near future for these citizens. An important point to be learned from this occurrence is this: if you plan to attend a public hearing for any reason—your neighbor wants to build close to your property line, for example—make some telephone calls and educate yourself BEFORE the hearing so you’re informed and ready to state your opinion when the time comes. City Council’s redistricting committee is currently looking at how the city’s districts should be redrawn following the Aboite annexation effective January 1, 2006. I won’t be surprised if the entire Waynedale area is moved into the 5th City Council District in the future. If you have opinions regarding this matter let me, Councilman Tim Pape, or any of the “At Large” Councilmen—Crawford, Shoaff, and Talarico—know your opinion.

Have a great summer. Don’t forget the huge FREE Neighborhood Party at Waynedale Park on Saturday, August 27th from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. There will be many free prizes, etc. for kids as well as their parents. Thanks again to organizers Beulah Stoker, Cheryl Connett, Renee Haugh and their team of volunteers, as well as, many local businesses which make this such a great event!

Give me a call with any suggestions for making Fort Wayne a better place to work, play, go to school, and retire!
