Waynedale Political Commentaries

DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS

You may have noticed on your recent trip on the Rivergreenway that the Fort Wayne Police Department has begun bike patrols along the Rivergreenway. The addition of bike patrols along with foot patrols provides a police presence and will help users of the greenway enjoy their outdoor activities. The City’s new Greenway Rangers program also is assisting with making the greenway cleaner and more user-friendly. Thirty-two volunteers check a portion of the greenway system once a week to make sure there aren’t any serious problems.

Enhancing our greenway system is a key element of my Green City initiative to improve government services and make the City more environmentally friendly. Our trails and greenways are a great asset to the community, and we thank the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Greenway Rangers for their hard work.

The City is investing in the Rivergreenway system. City crews are repaving the greenway and making landscaping and signage upgrades. The repaving of the entire greenway is expected to take three years. The City also plans to increase the miles of trails and greenways from 18 to more than 80. Last September, we announced a $2 million commitment to improve and add trails and greenways. The City’s financial support combined with other funding sources could bring the total to $8 million.

We recently announced the creation of a Housing Action Plan. Our goal is to attract 250 new homeowners to the City. We are committed to providing the best possible housing options for our residents. We build a better city by having strong neighborhoods, affordable housing and a great quality of life. We are creating an atmosphere and attitude that Fort Wayne is a great place to buy your first home or make improvements to your existing home.

Hopefully you had a chance to attend one of our recent Downtown BlueprintPlus public workshops. Nationally-recognized architect and planning visionary Gianni Longo has been working with us to help take downtown revitalization to the next level. Mr. Longo made several recommendations that he believes will help make downtown a great place for businesses, housing, shopping, and entertainment. Some of his recommendations include an aquatic center, a new downtown hotel and enhanced integration with neighborhoods. We will be examining all of the recommendations over the next several weeks to determine what the next steps should be in the revitalization effort.
