A HEALTHY DAY

A Toxic Environment

This last Monday I went to a health and wellness seminar to hear Dr. Steve Nugent, the author of “The Missing Nutrients” and “How To Survive On A Toxic Planet” and he gave me his permission to discuss what he talked about and here is an overview of what he said.

He explained that in our present time we are surrounded by stress including psychological, environmental, nutritional, and physical. Because of these stresses we are susceptible to the toxins that are the result. Every time we stress our bodies we release free radicals into our system. Free radicals are bad because they can allow for abnormal compounds, or toxic compounds, to be formed which can predispose us to diseases such as auto-immune diseases, cancer, and organ disease. In a healthy human these free radicals are maintained, controlled, and expelled by our immune system. The problem is that due to all of these stresses and toxins in today’s society our immune system is depleted and our bodies are not getting the essential nutrients to help keep our immune system at full potential to overcome these toxins.

Within our environment there are toxins being produced every day from engine emissions, factories, and even from our own lawns. Did you know that there are more toxins in our homes from tracking in lawn fertilizer than outside our homes? Another factor is our diet. Due to fertilizer, genetic engineering of food production, and ripening of fruits after cultivation, the nutrients in foods in today’s society are getting less and less. Also, did you know that cooked vegetables and dried fruits have fewer nutrients in them than raw? With physical stress our bodies are releasing more and more free radicals the more we strain our muscles. This is okay but since the nutrients are depleted in our diet, we cannot control the amount of free radicals produced. As for psychological stress our immune system is lowered with each negative thought but in essence it is raised with each positive thought. So laughing every day does help our immune system.

Since we are not able to count on our diet alone for the essential nutrients necessary to remain healthy then the only option is for supplementation. He explains how our body needs to achieve and obtain optimal health (Dr. Steve Nugent: “The Missing Nutrients” The Alethia Corporation; 2005). We need essential vitamins and minerals to create healthy cells, glyconutrients for cell-to-cell communication and immune support, phytonutrients to detoxify the system (plant nutrients), phytohormones for glandular function (plant hormones), Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) for cell regulation, hormonal function and metabolism, Essential amino acids, which serve as the building blocks for all proteins, and antioxidants to protect your cells from oxidative damage.

I don’t know about you but I want to live an optimal healthy lifestyle and I am sure you do to. I was amazed from what I learned from the seminar and am excited for more seminars to come.

In future articles I will go into more detail about each of these nutrients but for now if you would like to know more about them and ways to get the best supplements science has to offer then feel free to contact me at: Dr. James P.
