Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Joshua S. Durnell, son of Gail S. and Steven Durnell of Fort Wayne, IN, and more than 2,100 Marines and Sailors assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), have been working in Najaf, Iraq, after fighting in the city ceased August 28.

Members of the 11th MEU have the goal of restoring normalcy for the citizens of Najaf. Their immediate concerns are preparing schools for Iraq’s children along with the reconstruction of hospitals, roads and bridges.

Durnell’s unit is deployed with the Belleau Wood Expeditionary Strike Group to the Western Pacific and Central Command area of responsibility in support of the global war on terrorism.

Durnell’s unit is an expeditionary intervention force with the ability to rapidly organize for combat operations in virtually any environment.

MEU’s are built around a reinforced infantry battalion, a combat service support element, a reinforced helicopter squadron and a command element. With its complement of fully integrated air and ground forces, Durnell’s unit is ready to conduct real-world operations including amphibious, heliborne and boat raids, tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel, noncombatant evacuation operations and humanitarian assistance operations.

Durnell is a 2000 graduate of Wayne High School. And joined the Marine Corps in May 2002.

Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Dmitri Hatley, stepson of Steven E. and son of Yelena Hatley of Fort Wayne, Indiana, recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Illinois.

During the 14-week course, Hatley learned a wide range of medical procedures used to provide first aid and assist Navy doctors and nurses. Hatley also received an introductory instruction for service in a variety of medical environments, from fleet hospitals and shipboard medical departments to fleet Marine forces and medical administration offices.

Hatley’s newly acquired skills and knowledge will enable him to help provide quality health care to Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families. Hatley’s first assignment after school will involve direct patient care, but with his training, Hatley can work in several areas, including first aid and assisting with minor surgery, pharmacy and laboratory analysis, patient transportation, and food service inspections.

Hatley is a 2004 graduate of South Side High School of Fort Wayne and joined the Navy in February 2004.
