METHODIST ON A MISSION

The Waynedale United Methodist Church will step out in faith on January 2, 2005 and a team of 15-20 volunteers will depart on a two-week mission trip to the small island of Roatan Bay, Honduras. The Avalon Missionary Church, Zanesville United Methodist Church, and the Community Churches of Alexandria, Indiana are assisting with this mission project. The purpose of this mission is to build an addition to the small Honduran Methodist Bilingual School. Under the guidance of the Wesley Methodist Church of Honduras, the Bilingual School has been growing rapidly. It is attempting to educate 300 island children, grades K-10 in a six-room building. This small school brings not only education, but also faith to these Honduran children. Classes have spilled over into the sanctuary and the crowding is becoming critical. Extreme poverty makes it impossible for the Hondurans to add the needed space.

Tom and Nancy Reuille, members of WUMC, became aware of the conditions on Roatan during a pleasure cruise in September 2004. They decided to try to help these gentle island people when they realized that a common link, the Methodist faith, gave them a connection in God’s world community. This connection led to a gift of much-needed schoolbooks and supplies in February 2004. WUMC now has another huge shipment of English books and supplies donated by the congregation and the community, which will be ready to be shipped in early November.

As the friendship between Roatan and Wayndale developed, the additional need for space in the school became evident. The Missions Committee is working diligently to obtain funds and volunteers to enable this project to be completed. Requests for donations have been dispersed the week of October 3rd and a chili and hot dog supper with a large silent auction is planned at the Waynedale United Methodist Church, 2501 Church Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday, December 3, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm with all proceeds going to the Roatan Mission Project.

The WUMC along with the other involved churches have discovered one of God’s purposes for their lives and are giving themselves to be God’s tools to demonstrate His loving care to all nations of the world. If you would like to help (team members and donations are needed), call the WUMC at 747-7424 or the Reuilles at 638-4405 and please support the fund-raisers for this project.
