DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS,
City Ready to Purchase Several Flood-Damaged Homes
The City of Fort Wayne conducted closings and acquired several flood-damaged homes Friday, September 24, 2004.
Officials from the Indiana State Emergency Management Agency presented Mayor Richard with a check for $658,438 from the State of Indiana through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The check is the first in a series that the City will receive to purchase more than a dozen homes.
“We have been working for more than a year to get to this point. We have encountered several obstacles through this process, but we are pleased to be able to help the flood victims as we work to build a better city.” Following the closings, the City has scheduled the demolition of the properties and the lots will become open green spaces.
The homes on the buyout list are located in the Junk Ditch area, Winchester Road, Calhoun Street, Hoover Drive, Westbrook Drive, Henrietta Street, and Ross Street.
Over the past few months, the City and Maumee River Basin Commission met with flood victims, appraisals were conducted, and offers to purchase were made.
“I want to thank the flood victims for working with us to make the buyout process a success,” said Rodney Renkenberger-Executive Director, Maumee River Basin Commission. “We are continuing to work to find more grants to purchase additional homes in the future.”
