Response to Readers
Dear Waynedale Friends,
I was very much gratified to receive your questions regarding my last column. Many asked for clarification in identifying dangerous vs. non-dangerous people, and of people who may be pedophiles. You are right, in that stalkers exist, and it is helpful to know who is a threat and who is not. I am not here to tell you that I can, as a Registered Nurse, answer this unequivocally, but I can give you answers to the sexual spectrum of people we all live and work with every day:
Heterosexual-a man or woman who is sexually attracted to the opposite sex.
Homosexual-a man or woman who is sexually attracted to the same sex.
Bisexual-a man or woman who is attracted to both sexes.
Transgender-a female born into a male body or a male born into a female body. (It is thought that this takes place at about 3 months into the pregnancy.)
Transsexual-A transgender who changes his/her sex surgically.
All of the above variations take place in our society. They are not criminals as a result of this gender identity. They are friends and colleagues. I wish we could be kinder in accepting those who are different than we are. But there ARE those who we need to be aware of, and who ARE criminals:
Pedophile-This is a dangerous deviant. He is one who preys on children. With all the scandal that has hit the priesthood, we need to differentiate between those who are gay (or any of the above sexual variations), and the pedophiles. I was astounded to hear Pat Robinson say that gays were responsible for the scandal in the priesthood. This is so untrue. Gay people are not pedophiles. It is without reason or sanity for us to group together those who are gay with those who are pedophiles. The most pronounced difference between a gay person and a pedophile is that the pedophile (or child molester) is a pervert and a felon. A childhood friend of mine was the victim of a pedophile who happened to be her father. She was one of many brothers and sisters. I did not know when we were children that this was happening, nor did she tell me at that time. Children were silent then, and they continue to be silent, today. I think that this happens more than we know. Pedophiles can be family members, as well as strangers. Pedophiles prey on our young. I hope you won’t think ill of me if I tell you that I think they should all be thrown off the Kennedy Bridge.
I do not claim that none of the sexual groups listed above is incapable of sexual malice. But we do not want to make the mistake of accusing those who are sexually different to be criminals, such as the pedophiles are. Well, I’ve had another day on the soapbox.
