SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

To the residents of Lakewood Addition – your flagpole is back and is now flying the Stars and Stripes once again. The pole was taken down and carted to a warehouse, painted battleship gray, and refurbished with a brand new rope, and brass hardware. Robert Jobe, a Life Scout in Troop 38, sponsored by Calvary United Methodist Church here in Waynedale, chose this for his Eagle Scout project. Robert also led his group to put in a line of slanted red brick encircling the flowerbed at the base of the flagpole.

Now all that is left to do is put in a bench or benches for joggers and walkers to stop and rest. Once the landscaping is completed, he will have finished the last requirement for his Eagle badge. He is still accepting donations to help pay for materials if anyone would care to donate towards this worthwhile project – please send your monetary donations to Boy Scout Eagle Project, c/o Calvary Untied Methodist Church, 6301 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46819. If you have a new park bench or a wire trash container to donate, please contact Robert by calling Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Fox at 744-6001.

For those you who are interested: if you walk/jog North from the flagpole triangle in Lakewood Park (the area behind St. Therese), down Donna Drive to Maywood Circle, South down the length of Maywood Circle to Reserve Line Road, turn left (West) to Lakewood Drive, and back to the flagpole, you will have walked/jogged exactly ‘1’ MILE.

WHAT IS A BEAR CLAW CAMPER AWARD?

The Bear Claw Camper Award is to recognize Scouts and Scouters (Scout leaders) who have camped at least fifteen (15) days and nights, outside, and preferably under canvas as I understand. The 15 days and nights include a maximum of seven days and nights of ‘long-term’ camping (summer camp) and a Boy Scout must be a “First Class Scout” in rank to qualify. This is a service project of the Koskakon Lodge #75 of the Order of the Arrow to promote Scout camping in the Anthony Wayne Area Council and is the one of the first requirements to become an Arrowman. Scoreboards are available at the AWAC Service center and must be approved by and turned in at the AWAC Center by the Scoutmaster or Advisor. Earned Bear Claw patches are to be worn on the right pocket flap of your uniform.

71ST ANNIVERSARY LINCOLN PILGRIMAGE

On February 12th, hundreds of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and leaders will join together in front of the Manship Statue at the Lincoln Life Building on South Harrison Street in downtown Fort Wayne in celebration of Abraham Lincoln and President’s Day.

After the Scouts assemble in the heated Lincoln parking garage on Brackenridge Street, they will be led to Harrison Street for the presentation of unit colors and the laying of wreaths at the base of the statue (each scout unit is encouraged to bring a wreath).

There will be a short speech by the Executive Director of the Boy Scout, followed by a special speech by a Lincoln re-enactor. The program will end about 8pm. Please remember to bring your unit and American flags. Total cost of the activity is $4 for Scouts and adult leaders (parents & siblings-no charge). The price includes a one-piece 71st Anniversary Patch. Assemble at 7pm. Please register your unit at the AWAC Service by January 30, 2004.
