THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Payee Program

As a result of the tremendously difficult times in the Fort Wayne area many of the agencies have struggled to keep funding for services to help those in need. To supplement the outstanding service and dedication of these agencies, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office Payee Program continues to grow and prosper by “right sizing” the help a family needs fill in the gaps between community support and total self-sufficiency. To date the program has 55 participants who with minimal help from these agencies and Wayne Township have helped save valuable funds to be passed along to others.

Payee Representative William Carr and I are very proud of this program and it’s a joy to be able to help those that have acknowledged that they need assistance with managing their monthly obligations. This is the only program of its kind at a Township Office in Northeastern Indiana.

Our first priority is to make sure that current needs are met such as food, shelter, clothing, medical and dental care. All participants are set up on a budget to make sure their weekly needs are met. After the basic necessities, there is generally little, if any, money left over for recreation, entertainment, and family holidays or celebration of the holiday seasons.

Thanks to the generous cash and gift donations received from area merchants, retailers, and restaurants, last year Wayne Township provided a Christmas party and a gift basket to each participant. Things that many take for granted during the holiday seasons were realized for the first time in many years by some of these important guests. The great holiday joy seen on the faces of the payee’s was mirrored by the joy of Wayne Township staff sharing these precious moments with them.

This year, we have been soliciting and accumulating both monetary and non-monetary donations. The 2nd Annual Wayne Township Trustee Office Payee Program Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 19, 2003 at the League for the Blind and Disabled. The goal is to provide each participant an uplifting holiday experience and an individual check to purchase a gift of their choosing.

If you are interested in donating to this important holiday celebration please contact William Carr at the Wayne Township Office-or-if you know of someone that might benefit from the services offered by this free program: they must reside in Wayne Township, receive Social Security benefits, be 18 years of age or older, and deemed by a physician unable to manage their own financial affairs. Individuals do not have to be recipients of the Wayne Township’s Poor Relief Assistance.
