THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
2003 has been a challenging year for clients and staff of the Wayne Township Trustees office. With the spiraling cost of prescription medication, the loss of manufacturing jobs and the ever-increasing cost of utilities, low- income citizens have had to struggle. With high unemployment and a depressed local economy employment prospects also appear bleak in the Summit City. Requests for township assistance have risen by 43% from 1999; the table below provides a graphic comparison.

The enormous increase in applications for Township assistance has been felt across the state of Indiana. The larger Townships have had to borrow money to meet the needs of an escalating indigent population and many more will probably need to do the same. That’s why our community partnerships have been so important, faith based organizations, government agencies and the philanthropic efforts of the private sector have addressed many needs that would have otherwise gone unmet in our community. I would like to send a special thank you to all of the agencies that provide assistance to those in need.
Many client’s believe that utility service must be in a disconnect status before Wayne Township will consider assistance. We are asking that clients contact our office for assistance the first month they are unable to make payments in full on any utility bill. Seeking assistance early may help prevent an interruption of service.
I would like to thank our clients for their patience and understanding, most appreciate the fact that we are making every effort to see them in a timely manner. I would also like to thank my staff for their hard work and dedication in processing the sheer volume of monthly applications, which allows us to meet our dual responsibility as guardian of the taxpayer and advocate of the poor.
