COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
As I write this column Allen County has just been declared a flood disaster area. That will offer some additional financial help to residents of Waynedale and the entire south side of Fort Wayne who were hit hard by the recent flooding. It was bad enough that torrential rainstorms dumped millions of gallons of water on Fort Wayne. Complicating the situation was the fact that Adams County was also a flood disaster area. Storm water headed up the swollen St. Mary’s River and the overloaded Fairfield Ditch from Adams County into heavily populated areas of Fort Wayne. Many volunteers helped fill sandbags and local residents and city workers worked hard to fight back floodwaters in Belle Vista, the Dalevue Drive area, and all along the St. Mary’s River from the Winterset neighborhood up to Foster Park. Fort Wayne spent hundreds of thousands of dollars providing personnel and equipment to fight the flood. The City of Fort Wayne’s Emergency Operations Center was open and coordinating flood fighting efforts until Mon., July 13th. After that date the city’s cleanup assistance team will be available to help out—that telephone number is 427-5258. I spent some time in all of the above areas during the flood and was really amazed at the positive attitude of homeowners even when they had been forced out of their homes. Only those who have been in the path of a flood can know how tough it is to have your basement or living room filled with floodwater. Hopefully we’ll have a few dry days and cleanup can be completed fairly soon.
Welcome to both banks that are expanding their operations in the “Waynedale News” area. Star Financial Bank has constructed a new facility on Bluffton Road not too far north of the Bluffton Road-Lower Huntington Road Intersection. More recently, Tower Bank broke ground for a new bank branch at the intersection of Old Trail Road and Lower Huntington Road. These developments point out that the Waynedale area is seen as an important place to do business. It’s good news to see something positive happening at both locations including at the old Maloley’s grocery site where Tower Bank will be locating.
Planning is continuing for the Waynedale picnic scheduled for Saturday, August 30th at Waynedale Park. This event will be held for everyone in the area, especially for kids. Tentative time is from 10 am to 2 pm. Thanks to Beulah Stoker, Cheryl Connett, Renee Haugh, Officer Cornell Wiley, many others, and also to local businesses for their efforts to pull off this 1st ever all-Waynedale party. Those businesses that contribute to the effort will be given credit for their assistance.
