I would like to take the opportunity in this issue of the Waynedale News to share with you all of the wonderful summer recreation activities offered by the City of Fort Wayne’s Parks and Recreation Department. No matter what your interests or what your age, you will find something exciting in Fort Wayne Parks this summer.
The City has 87 parks covering more than 2,000 acres. Foster Park, in southwest Fort Wayne along the St. Mary’s River, is one of the city’s largest recreational facilities. Foster is the site of Fort Wayne’s new dog playground, Pawster Park. The special dog park opens Memorial Day weekend and will give residents the opportunity to let their canines run free in a safe environment.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Foster Park Golf Course. To celebrate, the City of Fort Wayne is offering nine holes of golf for 75-cents every Friday in June at all three city golf courses, Foster, Shoaff and McMillen. There is also a new golf course in Fort Wayne, Mad Anthony Threes at McMillen Park. The short course is reserved for the Lifetime Sports Academy on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but is open to the public when not in use by the Academy. Mad Anthony Threes is a great place to brush up your golf game.
Another jewel in the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department is the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. The zoo, located near Franke Park, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through October 12. New animals for 2003 include monkeys, sea lion pups, rat snakes, parrots, finches, exotic fish and a miniature donkey. Named the nation’s best children’s zoo, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is fun for kids and adults alike.
In addition to dozens of park activities, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department also offers day camps, fitness instruction, arts and crafts and many more activities throughout the summer.
I encourage everyone in Fort Wayne to take advantage of the opportunities offered through the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Our facilities are outstanding and they belong to everyone.
