COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
Allen County Sheriff James A. Herman, announced today that the Indiana Sheriff’s Association will again be awarding college scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies. There will be approximately 40 $500 scholarships awarded to qualifying students throughout the state. The ISA scholarship fund was established for the purpose of receiving, investing, and dispensing of funds to provide college scholarships to qualified students who are committed to pursuing an education and career in the law enforcement field.
To qualify for one of these scholarships, the applicant must be an Indiana resident. Be a member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member of the association, attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll as a full-time student (12 hours). Applications, needed to apply for the scholarships, are available from your high school counselor, the sheriff’s office or by writing to the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, Post Office Box 19127, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219, and requesting an application. The applications must be completed and received by the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association on or before April 1, 2003.

THREE RIVERS SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM TO OFFER OPPORTUNITIES/SCHOLARSHIPS
The departments of Biology and Chemistry of USF are offering opportunities for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in science to participate in a two-day program of workshops using research techniques and equipment generally unavailable in a high school setting. The Symposium will take place on campus on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22, 2003. Both workshops offer students a hands-on laboratory experience, small group collaboration, and teaching from experts in the field.
The Science Symposium awards honor scholarships to selected participants who eventually enroll as full-time biology, chemistry, or environmental science majors at USF. The Science Symposium awards up to $32,000 per year in honor scholarships to participants. The deadline for receipt of application material is March 10. USF STUDENTS STUDY CHILD WELFARE & TAX POLICY AT STATE CAPITOL
USF students in Barb Burdge’s Social Work courses recently traveled to Indianapolis to study child welfare legislation and human services funding, among other social policy issues. USF students, alumni and instructors participated in the Legislative Education and Advocacy Day, or LEAD, and annual event that allows social work students and faculty from across the state to learn about current social policy issues being addressed in the current session of the Indiana General Assembly. Social Work students also learned how to communicate effectively with legislators on behalf of the vulnerable and disenfranchised members of society, and toured the Indiana Statehouse.
USF JUNIOR SELECTED FOR NATIONAL CHEMISTRY FELLOWSHIP
John Gensic, a junior at USF was selected to participate in a six-week Nuclear and Radiochemistry Summer School at San Jose State University in California. Gensic was one of twelve students selected for this national fellowship, which is funded by the US Department of Energy. The fellowship includes all tuition, fees, transportation, books, laboratory supplies and a $3,000 stipend. The session will run from June 15, 2003 to July 26, 2003. Gensic will study the fundamentals of nuclear science, including nuclear medicine, and have the opportunity to tour nearby research laboratories.
JESTERS OF USF TO PERFORM ORIGINAL WORK
The Jesters, a performance troupe of children and youth with special mental or physical challenges, has announced The troupe is presenting an original musical, DOCTOR WATSON’S AMAZING DETECTIVE SCHOOL in an encore performance on Sunday, March 23 at the Embassy Theatre, 125 West Jefferson Blvd. The ticket price for this performance will be $7. VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY
LOCAL STUDENT RECEIVES TWO UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Allison Whitsell of Fort Wayne has been awarded two scholarships for Valparaiso University. She has received the Achievement Award and the Lutheran Heritage Award. Allison is currently a student at Northrop High School where she is captain of the varsity softball team and has been named a Scholar Varsity Athlete. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Allison will be enrolling in the College of Arts and sciences at VU in the Fall 2003 semester. She is the daughter of Nancy and Paul Whitesell of Fort Wayne.
LOCAL STUDENT RECEIVES UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
Rachel Janssen of Fort Wayne has been awarded the Presidential Scholarship from VU. The Presidential Scholarship is a grant awarded on the basis of high school rank, grade point average, scores on national tests, and academic achievement. It is renewable for three additional years if appropriate academic standards are maintained. Rachel is currently a student at Bishop Dwenger High School where she is a member of the varsity tennis team and is a member of the National Honor Society. Rachel will be enrolling in the College of Arts and Sciences at VU in the fall of 2003. She is the daughter of Beth and Gerrit Janssen of Fort Wayne.
NORTH SIDE HIGH SCHOOL TO PRESENT ITS OWN “BACK TO THE FUTURE”
The gathering will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of NSHS and be held Saturday, May 3, 2003, from 6pm until 11pm at the school. Music, presentations and displays will portray the past 7-1/2 decades since the school opened in 1927. This will be the last event held in the present building before renovations begin in the spring.
