MAE JULIAN

Trick or treat! Trick or treat! Give me something good to eat! Last night was Halloween night. It is the best holiday of the year, in my opinion. You don’t have that pre-Christmas rush, or all the “to-do” that precedes other holidays. It is just fun. Adults and kids can just be silly! I was driving through a subdivision, and I had to laugh to see that there were as many adults out as kids. Of course, the reason stated by the adults it that they are out to protect the kids, but I have a suspicion that the adults are loving Halloween as much as the kids.

When we were kids, we made at least a 3 day affair of it. We started early and didn’t quit ’till Halloween was over. The pranks mainly included soaping The Dime Store, Umber’s Hardware Store, The Waynedale Pharmacy and everything in-between. We did not soap the windows of the old folks (that probably would interpret into anyone over 40!). We had grocery bags full of treats and would eat ’till we were sick. It was brisk, the end of our summer, autumn in all its glory, and a transition time before we had to get serious about school. Here is a picture of the grandchildren of one of my best friends, Betsy Cochran Ormiston, and her husband, Buck Ormiston. Brittany is the older and Sara Ann is the younger. I love this picture. It will soon be made into a pillow. In the faces of these beautiful girls hugging their scarecrow and their pumpkins, is the epitomy of what Halloween is! It is everything we want it to be. Carefree youth, fun, and make-believe.

I hope all of you, adults and kids, had a great Halloween in Waynedale and elsewhere. I am glad that the nay-sayers did not frighten everyone off. All of those stories about abduction and razor apples didn’t intimidate these beautiful children, or thousands of others. Thank God Halloween has not been eradicated along with everything these days that makes many adults ban fun things because of their own fears.

Brace yourselves readers, the major holidays are coming up. Hold on to Halloween!

Love to my Waynedale friends,

Mae Julian
