SMOKE ON THE WIND
I have an Indian statue that is about four feel tall and weighs about fifty pounds. ‑I was moving it the other day and dropped it on my bare foot, severely bruising my right foot and breaking my little toe. But there’s more of a story here than this columnist’s gimpy foot.
I am the Chaplain of The American Legion Post #246 in Albion, Indiana, and on the Honor Guard.
On September 11th, we were all assembled on the lawn of the Noble County Courthouse. ‑I was to say a prayer and the Honor Guard would give a twenty-one gun salute. ‑I had pondered what to say as I hobbled around Peace Tree Ridge outside our home on the early morning of 9/11, and as the sun was coming up, I saw this beautiful butterfly, a symbol of peace, beauty, faith, balance, and renewal.
All went well on the courthouse lawn as the people held hands with one another and formed a circle around the police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and the Legion Honor Guard. ‑The courthouse bell was rung, prayers were said, the 21-gun salute was given, “taps” was played, and there was a butterfly that said “God Bless America!”
