GIAQUINTA HONORED BY LEGION FOR LEGISLATIVE SERVICE
State Rep. Ben GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne), a World War II veteran, was honored by the American Legion Department of Indiana for his legislative efforts on behalf of those men and women who have served their country. GiaQuinta was one of four state lawmakers who received the 2002 Distinguished Public Service Award during the Legion’s 84th annual department convention in Indianapolis. More than 1,000 Legionnaires from across the state witnessed the presentation by Department Commander John J. Michalski.
The award, first presented in 2000, is given annually to legislators who demonstrate distinguished and honorable service, support classical values and serve as unwavering advocates for Hoosier veterans and their families. GiaQuinta’s presentation received specials acclaim from those in attendance because of the representative’s service during World War II. He was a member of the Army’s 102nd Infantry Division in Europe.
GiaQuinta’s legislative efforts on behalf of veterans have been a consistent part of his tenure in the Indiana House. Among his accomplishments are securing state funding for a national monument for World War II veterans and authoring a state law that helps patients receive assistance at the Indiana Veterans home.
In the 2002 session, GiaQuinta sponsored legislation that makes it easier for the children of veterans to attend college. He also supported a proposal that enables honorably discharged veterans of World Wars I and II to receive their high school diplomas, if their military service prevented them from graduating.
KWVA MEETING
The meeting of the Korean War Veterans Assn., Indiana Chapter One will resume on August 10th, at the American Legion Post #82 on Harris Road. Meeting time will be at 9am with breakfast beginning at 8am. Friends and spouses are welcome.
FLAG ETIQUETTE

Question: How are unserviceable Flags destroyed?
Answer: The Code suggest that, “. . . when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning.” For individual citizens this should be done discreetly so that the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or discretion. Many American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14 (Flag Day) each year. This ceremony creates a particularly dignified and solemn occasion for the retirement of unserviceable flags.
Question: Can the flag be washed or dry-cleaned?
Answer: Yes. There are no provisions of the flag code which prohibit such care. The decision to wash or dry-clean would be dependent on the material.
AMERICAN LEGION POST 241
A Flag burning ceremony will be held August 3rd at 1pm. We’re asking that all members plan to attend as we put all our worn out flags to rest.

YOUR LEGION EMBLEM MEANING!
The emblem was patterned after the ‘victory’ buttons of WWI. Delegates to the National Convention in 1919 voted to make the design the permanent badge of the organization. Creation of the emblem is credited to Eric Fisher Wood, a legion founder.
The rays of the Sun symbolize justice, loyalty, freedom, and democracy. The outer bronze ring pledges loyalty and Americanism. The inner ring stands for Legion service. The star is the Victory symbol of WWI–honor, glory, constancy via, U.S. The wreath forms the center and pays tribute to those who gave their lives for their country – our comrades. The two gold rings symbolize two Legion objectives: care for the sick and disabled veterans; wholesome development of our children/youth. The words, “American Legion” tie the emblem together in truth, remembrance, honor, service, rehabilitation, child welfare, loyalty and Americanism.
