THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
As we continue to prepare for and celebrate the holiday season, I would like to ask you all to remember the families and individuals who are at a such a severe economic disadvantage that they cannot provide for their basic necessities, much less buy gifts for their loved ones. Although this is a sad image, it is very much a reality to several of our neighbors. We at Wayne Township are doing what we can to help make this Christmas a happier holiday for our clients.
We have partnered with the Allen County Christmas Bureau, as we do every year, and adopted thirty families in need so that they can have a nice Christmas. The Poor Relief and Outreach Departments selected the families, and with the assistance of our Workfare staff, the gifts are being collected and distributed this week. Thanks to all of our citizens who donated so generously to this worthy cause!
The Outreach department will be hosting its annual Christmas party for the residents of our homeless shelter and self-sufficiency program this Saturday. There is going to be a wonderful Christmas dinner and Santa Clause will be on hand to make the children smile and hand out toys. This is truly one of the most touching events I have attended. On Friday, December 21, the Northeast Regional Housing and Homeless Task Force will be having its annual Memorial Walk for Homeless, in remembrance of the homeless citizens that have passed away. It begins at 6:00 PM at the Rescue Mission (301 W. Superior St.) and ends at Headwaters Park. Immediately following, participants will gather at the Mission for hot chocolate and fellowship. The public is warmly invited to join us.
These joyous events give my staff and I, and other volunteers, the opportunity to experience the true meaning of Christmas as we celebrate the spirit of giving and community.
