WAYNEDALE WOODS AND WATERS
HUNTING SEASON 2001
OK, so I didn’t get a deer this year and OK, so I didn’t even see any antlered deer either. I shouldn’t even mention that it rained (poured) every day and the wind blew every day (we were also camped on the edge of a tornado) and that we were wading around in mud most of the time trying to keep dry and warm under a makeshift tarp/frame/structure. BUT we did sleep good (pop-up camper with electric heater), we ate good (most every one in our hunting party is a certified GOTTA-HAVE-TO-SURVIVE CHEF) and the food was delicious and plentiful. There is one new ‘greenie’/just-joined/new hunter in our hunting party who’s food preparation is questionable at best but we have every confidence that his cooking will improve; after all he was an Assistant Scoutmaster at one time.
We camped and hunted the Salomonie Reservoir area just south of Huntington, Indiana. We camped in the Lost Bridge West Campground (because they have electric sites). We had to carry in our own water since the faucets and showers are shut down for the winter. The little grocery/filling station (Mount Etna Lighthouse) at the corner of State Routes 9 and 124 let us refill our water jugs at their outside faucet. By the way, thank you.
We kept a large coffee pot full of water on the camp stove all the time for instant coffee, cup-a-soup, hot chocolate, instant oatmeal and for ‘bath time’. We had three ways of taking a bath: (1)Wash cloth – wash down as far as possible, wash up as far as possible, and then wash possible (it’s advised to use two wash cloths). (2)Stand Naked Outside between the trucks in the cold blowing rain with a bar of biodegradable soap. (3)Shower with a Clorox jug full of warm water. Stand under it and punch a few holes in the bottom. Number (2) is the fastest way to take a bath unless you slip and fall in the mud and then you have to add an extra minute or two to your bath time to scrape off the mud.
I can’t wait to see what our hunting season will be like next year. My dad once said, “A Bad day hunting (actually there is no such thing – some are just a tad better than others) is better than a Good day working.” I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.
4-H SHOOTING SPORTS .22 PROGRAM
This program will begin January 2, 2002 at 6:30pm at Concordia Lutheran High School, 1601 St. Joe River Drive. All meetings will be held at Concordia Lutheran High School Shooting Range in the school. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants. The program is open to youth in grades 5-12. The cost of the program is $20 – equipment will be provided. Classes will be held on 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings January 2,9,16,23,30, February 6,13,20,27 and March 6, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The WAYNEDALE NEWS will pay for one student’s class fee IF you stop by the office and pick up the required paperwork ahead of time. You must attend all classes and bring a note from your instructor that you passed. We will then reimburse you ($20) for the cost of the .22 Rifle Class. Good Luck!
4-H SHOOTING SPORTS AIR RIFLE PROGRAM

HUNTER SAFETY EDUCATION CLASS
Allen County 4-H will be hosting a Hunter Safety Education Class on two Saturdays – February 16 and 23, 2002. Participants must attend both days. This class is limited to 40 participants. This FREE class is co-sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources. The class will be from 8am to 3:30pm both days. Participants are urged to bring a brown bag lunch. It is open to adults and youth. Persons age 12 or younger must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Participants must pre-register. Call 481-6826. This class usually fills up very fast.
