JOYCE L. STUFF, 52
Joyce L. Stuff, 52, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana. A native of Fort Wayne, she was a laborer with Fort Wayne Metals since 2000. She previously was employed for 28 years with Magnavox Corporation. She was involved with Cub Scout Pack 3044 and Boy Scout Troop 44 in the 80’s.
She is survived by sons Thomas Stuff, Fort Wayne; Bryan Stuff, Fort Wayne; brother, Thomas Arms, Fort Wayne; sisters Deb Arms of Fort Wayne; Sue Arms of Lakeland, Florida; Mary Bethann Crupe, Garrett, Indiana; step-brothers Thomas, Robert, & Charles Vangorder, Fort Wayne; and 5 grandchildren.
Services were held at 1pm, Saturday, October 5, 2002 at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, with burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery with Reverend Ron Burns officiating. Memorials to American Cancer Society or Visiting Nurse Service’s Hospice Home.
NOTE: Joyce Stuff was our right hand man/person back when Dale Wilkinson and I helped with Cub Pack 3044 at Maplewood School. Joyce was ‘Popcorn Kernel’ (more times than I can count) in charge of rounding up and tallying the Scouts’ popcorn sales and distributing the popcorn to the boys as well as handing out the awards that the boys won for selling popcorn. She did a lot of running and legwork for the Pack.
Later, when her sons graduated to Boy Scout Troop 44, sponsored by Portage Creek Camp Association, she continued to be our lovable Popcorn Kernel and again dedicated her time to running errands for the troop, going after awards at the Scout office, and helping with paperwork. She was also a member of Troop 44’s Mothers’ Auxiliary and helped raise money through Christmas Bazaars and Garage Sales to pay for renovation of the kitchen in the Scout Cabin. The mothers’ Auxiliary also paid for the roofing that was put on the garage that was built onto the Scout Cabin.
When no one else could accompany the Scoutmaster for the required, ‘two deep leadership’ (Boy Scout National Headquarters requires a minimum of two adult leaders at all functions), Joyce would volunteer to go camping and brave the elements, “. . . for her boys.” Her boys, included every member of the troop, not just her own sons. Joyce was more than a dedicated leader; she was also part of the gang; she was a good neighbor, friend, and buddy, as well as a respected leader.
I last saw her alive Friday night, September, 27, 2002; I was scheduled to leave on a trip out of state the following Tuesday morning, October 1, 2002. She died, after I had left. I came back Friday. My intentions were to visit her that night. There was a voice mail from her good friend and neighbor, Marilyn Long, informing me that we had lost Joyce. My next visit was to see her lying at peace with no more pain and suffering in her cancer-ridden body. Joyce Stuff, you were a good Eagle Scout mother, a good friend, and a loyal worker for Cub Scout Pack 3044 and Boy Scout Troop 44. We love you and we’ll miss you. I’m glad I got to hug you one last time and personally tell you how I/we felt.
