HOUSE PASSES GIAQUINTA BILL HELPING VETERANS

Indiana House members today approved legislation co-authored by State Rep. Ben GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) that enables counties to help pay burial costs for veterans and their spouses. House Bill 1769, which passed by an 89-1 margin, sets the veterans’ burial allowance at $1,000. Present state law allows counties to provide up to $125 for the care of a body and a burial plot.

Impacted by the bill are veterans, people on active duty with the armed services, their spouses, widows or widowers.

FLAG ETIQUETTE

(From ‘Let’s Be Right on Flag Etiquette’)

Question: Is it necessary for a person to stand and salute when the National Anthem is played?

Answer: During rendition of the National Anthem when the Flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the Flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the Anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the Flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the Flag were displayed there.
