SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS
Well it may have been winter in Waynedale but our local Boy Scout units were kept far from hibernating. Troop 38’s Scoutmaster Jerry Lloyd and Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Fox organized monthly lock-ins at the Southeast YMCA. The Scouts had the ‘Y’ under their control for 12 hours and they utilized the pool, the multiple gym areas, and the rest of the facility for their rank advancements or for just plain ol’ fun.
Most of the Scouts had worked up a huge appetite, sooooo around 10:00pm, when the PAPA JOHN’S PIZZA delivery rep show up they proved they didn’t have any problem putting away a half a large pizza per Scout. We are truly appreciative of all the work and effort that Troop 38 undertook to provide a change of pace to the winter scene for the rest of the Scout units in the Waynedale area. We may be in competition as troops but we are all Scout brothers.
Troop 344, chartered through Waynedale United Methodist Church, has kept Scoutmaster Bob Rainwaters and the whole committee more than occupied. The unit participated in the lock-ins and fellowship at the YMCA. 344 also place 4th at the Miami District’s annual Winter Klondike Derby held at Jefferson Park, New Haven earlier this year.
The true test came over the weekend of March 7 with a ‘real’ winter campout at Pokagon State Park. The Scouts set up camp Friday evening and reviewed skills that they had been working on in preparation for the derby competition the next day.
Our Indiana weather came through as usual and the Scouts got some “winter camping experience” with rain, sleet, hail, and snow along with some sparse sunshine. The Scouts cooked and ate well to keep energy levels up for the 17-degree morning temperature. And it took all the energy they could muster to hike the park trail that took them over the 2nd highest point in the state of Indiana.
Along the hike the Scouts worked on locating and identifying native wildlife. The wildlife cooperated; they spotted and identified their set quota of animals. One particular moment found them watching a large red tail hawk attempting to become airborne while carrying a raccoon in its sharp talons.
A positive aspect of camping at this time of the year is that the camping areas are not crowded at all. The leaders’ final tally showed that we brought home as many Scouts as we took with us – we count that as a win.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 38 LEADERS ANNOUNCE SUMMER CAMP PLANS
Be prepared to have fun and adventure this summer with Boy Scout Troop 38. Summer Camp will find us camping at Camp Chief Little Turtle in our own reserved Iroquois Campsite, during Session 4 from July 6 to July 12, 2003. Anyone wanting to attend camp with our troop, please contact Scoutmaster Jerry Lloyd at 7pm on any Monday night at Calvary United Methodist Church, 6301 Winchester Road. Boy Scout Summer Camp fees are: $155 for boys and $55 for adults. Payments are due in three increments – March 1, 2003-$55, April 25, 2003-$55, and May 23, 2003-$45 or in one lump sum of $155. To join, a boy must be at least 11 years old and no older than 18; an adult leader is anyone over 18 but to be able to transport anyone to camp an adult must be 21 or over.”
