WAYNEDALE OUTDOORS Q & A

(A column, whereas, you the reader may ask Ben questions about camping, cooking, hunting, fishing, or anything concerning living in our Great Outdoors.)

Q – Where can I hunt with a Bonus Antlerless deer license?
A – Your question is best answered by telling you where you ‘can’t hunt’ with a Bonus Anterless deer license in our immediate area. You’re not allowed to use a Bonus Antlerless deer license at Roush Lake (Huntington Reservoir), Salamonie Lake (Salamonie Reservoir), Salamonie State Forest, Mississinewa Lake (Mississinewa Reservoir and Francis Slocum State Forest. There are other areas so I suggest if you are hunting outside of these areas then pick up a copy of the 2009 – 2010 Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide (page 11), available anywhere they sell hunting/fishing licenses.

Q – What can I use to hunt deer?
A – Shotguns, handguns, rifles with legal cartridges, muzzleloading long guns and muzzleloading handguns are legal during the firearm season. Only muzzleloading firearms are legal during the mussleloader season.

Hunters may carry more than one type of firearm when hunting during the firearm season only. Shotguns must be 10, 12, 16, or 20-gauge or .410 bore loaded with slugs or saboted bullets. Rifled slug barrels are permitted. Combination rifle-shotguns are not allowed.

For a list of calibers and ammunition legal for the state of Indiana check your Hunting & Trapping guide (page 9).

Q – What does T.I.P. stand for?
A – It stands for Turn In a Poacher (or Polluter). In a way it’s like an Outdoor Crime Stoppers program. Give them a call if you see poachers violating our fish, wildlife and environmental laws (anyone polluting our streams or lakes). Call them at 1-800-TIP-IDNR (1-800-847-4367).
